Brazil and the Antarctic; aspects of environment, science, technology, and international cooperation.
This site was produced by me, ERICK NILSON SOUTO, student of Law at Pontific Catholic University (PUC) in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Minas Gerais state lies between the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. I am in second year law, and have previously graduated in Computer Science from PUC in 1991.
This project was a winner of a contest at the PUC. I have won a week long trip to the Antarctic in December 1999. I did not have enough time to translate the essay, but I want to tell everyone what the essay is about, just in case it is misunderstood. I did not know anything about the region before I started my research, and from the beginning I fell in love with the subject. In my point of view, and from my work on the area, the Antarctic Treaty is the best way to ensure we will have a healthy planet to leave to our children. I have pointed to all aspects of the region, showing the good and bad initiatives. I reaffirm my point of view that the region should be kept free of all commercial ventures. I think that this is the only way to preserve our global environment and secure a future for the Earth.
